Aerosol Optical Depth Prediction from Satellite Observations
Aerosols are small airborne particles that both reflect and absorb incoming solar radiation and whose effect on the Earth’s radiation budget is one of the biggest challenges of current climate research. To help address this challenge, numerous satellite sensors are employed to achieve globalscale monitoring of aerosols. Given the satellite measurements, the common objective is prediction of Aer...
متن کاملMerging aerosol optical depth data from multiple satellite missions
This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in ACP if available. Abstract Agricultural biomass burning (ABB) in Central and East China occurs every year from occurred mainly in An-hui, Henan, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. A comprehensive set of aerosol optical 5 depth (AOD) data, produced...
متن کاملValidation of Aerosol Optical Depth Retrieved from SPOT Satellite Images
In this paper, the image-based retrieval algorithm of aerosol characteristics and surface reflectance is used to retrieve the AOD from SPOT images. The validation of retrieved AOD is made possible by using the AERONET data. Five SPOT satellite images are used to testify the algorithm. The results show that the RMSE of the retrieved AOD are 0.12 and 0.08 in XS1 and XS2 bands, although the larges...
متن کاملDirect spectral measurements with a Brewer spectroradiometer: absolute calibration and aerosol optical depth retrieval.
We present three different methods for the absolute calibration of direct spectral irradiances measured with a Brewer spectroradiometer, which are shown to agree to within +/- 2%. Direct irradiance spectra derived by Brewer and Bentham spectroradiometers agree to within 4 +/- 3%. Good agreement was also found by a comparison of the aerosol optical depth and Angstrom exponent retrieved by the tw...
متن کاملA long-term record of aerosol optical depth from TOMS observations and comparison to AERONET measurements
Observations of backscattered near-ultraviolet radiation from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on board the Nimbus-7 (1979–92) and the Earth Probe (mid-1996 to present) satellites have been used to derive a long-term record of aerosol optical depth over oceans and continents. The retrieval technique applied to the TOMS data makes use of two unique advantages of near-UV remote sensing...
